The Cutty Sark has been destroyed by a fire. I am absolutely devastated. James woke me up to tell me this morning, and then I spent half an hour crying into my cornflakes whilst watching the Beeb this morning. It's just so sad. I have such happy childhood/teenage memories. The riding stables where Monty lived was just over the river, so we used to walk through the foot tunnel to Greenwich. The tunnel comes up right next to the Cutty Sark. We used to pass it on the way to the market/cinema/friends houses and later, the pub. One of my oldest friends lived near it too. I also based my GSCE art project on the ship, I spent ages there, drawing and sketching. It is just so sad.
Scary Bez went there recently too, you can see pictures of it in all it's glory on her blog too.

Ah Nell, I thought of you when I heard the news this morning as I remembered the comment you wrote when I put those photos up. I hadn't actually seen any pictures of what happened until I followed the link on your post (no TV in our flat) - I can't believe they're saying they might be able to repair quite a bit of it - it looks completely devastated. So sad.
On a lighter note, I can't believe you linked to those photos of my parents and me being silly in London! The one of my mum and I jumping in the air makes me giggle.
Take care,
Sarah x

It's a real tragedy isn't it? You just wonder what kind of a person would do something like that.
At least they are already thinking about how best to restore her - I think the mast and other important bits were not on board at the time, so that's something.

How sad that it may have been deliberately set! Just awful.
